Labeling makes the
invisible visible, but it's limiting. Categories are the enemy of connecting.
Link, don't rank. - Author: Gloria Steinem
Habitual nature of mind is labeling the self, labeling the other,
labeling conditions, circumstances, relationships, and a horrifying experience
that freezes and condemns the consciousness. The I thought is a fundamental and
a complex root label created by articulation of identity, biography, projections, judgments, fear, aversions and
desires, a duality of mind. This I thought with layers upon layers of labels
expresses through the ego. By identifying, believing and holding onto the
labels the ego is caught in web of delusion just as a spider is tangled and
bound in its own web of creation.
Labels are based on assumptions and interpretations that filters, distorts
and destroy reality, it fragments, clutters the mind, the consciousness, or the
aware presence with objectification. It
is discriminating, a limitation on self, others, environment, and conditions
resulting in conflict. Labeling is an attempt to manipulate, control,
condescend and restrict the other or the environment, it is a form of
imposition or aggression on the other by denying the infinite reality. Simply
said, self-labelling is close mindedness, it is to tell the mind that it may
consider ideas only in a certain group and must preemptively reject ideas that
are beyond that group.
We put labels on
people and fight wars over them. If we truly want harmony, we have to get past
the labels.”- Wayne
W. Dyer
Dropping labels by letting go of attachments and identifications, it
liberates the bound consciousness, removes blockages. Meditation helps in self
liberation from labeling. Conventionally, ego believes that there is a world of
objects upon which are labelled and named. On self-realization, truth is
realized that it is actually the reverse, the world is synonymous and comes
into being by language and labels including the I thought.
To practice non labeling exercise in nature shifts the consciousness,
the totality of the appearance, sounds etc. arise in the space of pristine
awareness. There is silent aliveness, the picturesque nature appears as a
painting on a canvas. Non labeling exercise at a public place such as café is
like a stage play. When this happens there is no person watching but it is the
presence or aware space perceiving the arising and also at the same time
awareness in the background of being. This can be one of the portals to
realization, sense perception without mental labeling. An open vision, a simple
way of seeing that is totally receptive, free of all tendencies to label and
judge, there is only life presence.
The 'Mind' in it's
nature is conditioned to 'label'. From people, to situations, and circumstances
to everything in between. When we allow the mind to shut down we let things be
as they are. - Author: Matthew Donnelly
